Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Library open?
The library is open Wednesday and Friday. Please check back for more information.

How many books can I check out at once?
You may have a total of 2 books out at any time.  Books can be checked out for 2 weeks, and you can renew each book one time ONLY before you need to return it!

Do I need my ID card to check out books?  I know my number!
Yes--you need your ID card to check out your books.  If you don't have it, we will hold your book(s) behind the circulation desk until the next day.  If you lost it, go to Student Services* for a new one (replacement cards cost $5.00).

Can I play games on the Library computers?
No--the Library computers should only be used for research and checking for books on the online card catalog.  It's okay to check the MSMS school website and other educationally appropriate sites.

Do we have textbooks and other research books, like dictionaries?

Yes--Go to the Reference section, and you will see at least one copy of each of the current textbooks.  You may not check these out, but you can use them in the Library.  We also have other reference books, like dictionaries, thesauruses, atlases, and encyclopedias.  You can access great websites through the online catalog, using Web Collection Plus (just type in your subject, and check for online resources).

Can I type and print papers for my classes in the Library?
We have 17 computers available, running Mac OSX.  You can use the Microsoft Office Suite, which includes Word, Powerpoint and Excel or Appleworks.  If you want to print information from an Internet site, be sure to cut-and-paste the information, picture, etc. onto a word or drawing document first (see the Librarian if you don't know how to do this).  Each computer has a CD drive and USB port (connection for thumb drive).  We have external disk drives (for regular floppys) on some of the computers, but not all.  You may print your documents in the Library with permission.  Remember, we have a black-and-white printer, so do not expect it to come out in color.  You need to check with the Librarian before you print.

How do I find the book I'm looking for?
Use the online card catalog on the Browsers (computers #13 and #14 along the back wall).  Just type in the title, author, subject, or a keyword, and click on the appropriate icon.  The catalog will tell you if the book is available; if it's in, just check on the shelves!  If you still can't find it, come and see the Librarian and she will be very happy to help you!

Is it okay to eat or drink in the Library?
No--please do not bring food or drinks into the library. It's bad for the media material and horrible for the carpet.  We also don't want to encourage ants!

Do you know of any good books?

Yes, there are so many good books to be found in our Library!  We have over 9,000 books-- so I would have to say that we should be able to find something to interest you!  I have a number of personal favorites that I will be happy to recommend!  Check out the MSMS Book Recommendations page on this site, the Recommended Books links and the Book Recommendation Tree along the Library hallway.

Can we check out magazines?
No--the magazines and newspapers we have in the Library are for in-Library use only.  We subscribe to only a few magazines, but would like to get your recommendations for future subscriptions.
