We promote independent thinking as well as cooperative learning in a positive and respectful environment. We are committed to the physical, social, and emotional well-being of our students and staff, offering support and guidance that is rooted in a profound sense of responsibility for the enormously important work we share. I included the MSMS mission statement for it is the basis for all of the good work that happens every day at MSMS. We focus on student learning while nurturing the whole child. We have worked together to find more ways to reach, teach and reteach students so that all students are successful. MSMS has much to be proud of and we need to take time to celebrate our successes both small and large. Keeping a focus on our students will help guide us through the remainder of the school year as teaching early adolescents is what we do best especially in uncertain and difficult times. Our students look to the adults in their lives on how to handle major changes that impact their lives. They will be watching all of us to see how to deal with this new challenge of school consolidation. This is a defining moment for us and our students; it is up to us to handle changes that come our way with compassion, courage, dignity, grace and above all humor. I have faith that we will use this teachable moment to help all of us to become stronger and more resilient. I want to thank all of you who attended the January 26th board meeting. It was a difficult thing to hear and see the recommendation to close MSMS presented. Superintendent Dr. Vrankovich’s Middle School Closure Recommendation PowerPoint can be found on the District website www.crpusd.org . The actual recommendations are listed in the District’s portion of this newsletter. Please remember that the Board has the final say in this matter and will be making that decision at the February 23rd meeting. The recommendation to close MSMS turns our world upside down. As important adults in your students’ lives, they will look to you to be reassured that they will be okay and we will make it through. MSMS students were attentive and asked great questions when our Assistant Principal and I met with all students during their PE class to share the recommendations with them. As early adolescents, they are old enough to be told what is happening and get all the information available, so they are then able to better handle the situation. They are excited about being able to participate in the naming of the new school, mascot and school colors. In addition, this promoting class will the last class to promote from the school site and our seventh graders will be the first promoting class from the new school. As impacted as we are by this recommendation, MSMS will continue to focus on making sure that our students remain at the forefront. It is each one of us (students, parents, and staff) who makes MSMS the best place to learn and grow. WINTER HONOR DAY We held our Winter Honor Day on Friday, January 29th. We honored over 500 students for a wide range of achievements and presented them with a certificate. We were fortunate to have a guest speaker at each of the grade level ceremonies. Students can show Mr. Morgan their certificate and get the badge they earned. Be sure to purchase a MSMS Badge Stole to sew badges on and wear on special occasions such as Awards Night and Promotion. Stoles can be purchased in the office for $15. EXPEDITIONARY PASTA FEED Mark March 12th on your calendar! It is time again for our Annual Expeditionary Learning Pasta Feed/Silent Auction and Talent Show. It is not to be missed. There is great food, great auction items (check out the incredible grade level baskets) and a great talent show. It starts at 5:00 pm in our MU. RCHS STEP UP DAY All 8th graders will be walking to RCHS on Thursday, February 25th to take a tour of TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL INTERVIEWS THS principal, Mr. Littlefield will be interviewing THS applicants on March 17th and 19th. Students whose applications were accepted will be interviewed. Notification of the day and time of the interview will be sent out shortly. If you have any questions, you can call the EMERGENCY CARDS It is very important that all students’ emergency cards are updated whenever there is a change in your address, phone numbers and most importantly who can pick up your child in case of an emergency. If there was an emergency where students needed to be picked up by an authorized adult—MSMS can only release the student to a person listed on the emergency card. So it is very important to have an updated emergency card. Please be sure your child’s emergency card is updated. ASBESTOS NOTIFICATION TO PARENTS In compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), the spring of 1998 inspections were performed on each of our school buildings for asbestos containing building materials. The inspection findings and the asbestos management plans have been on file at each school site and at the District Office since that time. As required by AHERA, a 3-Year Re-inspection was recently completed. That report is in the school’s Asbestos Management Plan and is available for anyone to review during normal school hours.
